Drop bar or Mountain bike. Or both—Frankenbike!
We do NOT recommend a full road bike set up—but it has been attempted—once.
First consider your course. The 40, 20 and 60 mile courses are almost entirely gravel (no pavement).
Distance will also determine your projected saddle time.
Lastly, are you going for speed or comfort?
But don’t be fooled, some of the fastest course times are still on mountain bikes and some find the drop bar set-ups more comfortable. It’s not all about frame/bar choice either.
Tire size is a big one. A larger tire is going to offer more comfort and control.
We suggest at least a 38mm size tire or more. Tubeless set-up is also recommended.
Gearing: While there is significant climbing on all the routes, what your bike has now will likely work. It's best to use equipment that you are familiar with and have trained on. Try not to make any big changes on the day of the event.
Remember, no matter your equipment choice, the choice you made to participate is the best one!
